FAqs - Frequently Asked qUESTIONS
What is a Notary Public?
A notary public is a government-appointed official who acts as a neutral witness in legal matters to prevent fraud. They play a vital role in upholding the integrity of legal documents by providing an official seal or stamp. Notary publics verify the identity of signers, ensure they understand what they're signing, and confirm their mental capacity to sign. Their presence also ensures no coercion is involved. They are authorized to perform their duties according to the laws and regulations of their respective jurisdictions.
What identification documents do I need to provide for notarization?
Please ensure you have a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card. The name on the identification document must match the name on the document to be notarized. For more information on what IDs are accepted and how to make sure your name matches, check out our ID Guide blog post.
What if I don’t have a photo ID?
Sometimes signers may not have a valid photo ID. In such cases, the California notary law allows the use of "Credible Witnesses." These are individuals who personally know the signer and can vouch for their identity. To learn more about credible witnesses, check out our Credible Witness blog post.
How long does the notarization process typically take?
The time required for the notarization process can vary based on the number of documents and their complexity. For loan signings, we recommend setting aside approximately one hour for the appointment. For other documents, we suggest allocating at least 30 minutes. If there are more than five documents that require notarization, it is advisable to set aside an hour. Our goal is to make the process efficient while ensuring everything is done correctly and allowing ample time for any questions you may have.
